Macrodata Refinement Game
A free Severance fan game that drops you behind the keyboard at Macrodata Refinement on the severed floor of Lumon Industries. Hunt the scary numbers, click reacting digits to refine them into the five bins, and complete your file — entirely in your browser, no signup required.
How to Play
Three steps. Just like the company manual.
-
Step 01
Move your cursor across the grid
Most numbers are calm and still. Drift slowly and feel the grid out — refinement is a craft.
-
Step 02
Find the scary numbers
When you near a frightened cluster, the numbers will jitter and lean away. That's the cluster you want.
-
Step 03
Refine them into the bins
Click a reacting digit to capture a nearby pattern. They'll fly into one of the five bins — WO, FC, DR, MA, ET. Repeat until the file is full.
About Macrodata Refinement
Macrodata Refinement is the most mysterious — and most important — department on the severed floor of Lumon Industries. Refiners spend their days at small green CRT terminals, staring at endless grids of digits, watching for the ones that "feel" different. The work is famously inscrutable. Even the refiners themselves do not know what the numbers mean. They only know the feeling.
This Severance MDR game is a faithful, in-browser recreation of that experience. The grid is rendered with a real CRT shader — scanlines, phosphor glow, vignetting, and a warm bloom over the cool teal-green backdrop. Numbers nearby your cursor begin to flinch and lean away. When a digit reacts, click it to capture a nearby pattern of refinable numbers and send them to the bins.
The five bins along the bottom — labeled with two-letter codes for the four tempers (Woe, Frolic, Dread, Malice) plus a fifth slot — receive the refined clusters. Each cluster has a pre-assigned home; your job, just like the refiners on the show, is not to classify but to find. Complete all five bins to 100% and your file is closed. The most famous file, of course, is Cold Harbour.

What is Macrodata Refinement?
Macrodata Refinement (MDR) is the fictional department on the severed floor of Lumon Industries in Apple TV+'s Severance. Refiners stare at grids of numbers all day and sort the ones that "feel scary" into one of five bins, completing files such as the now-famous Cold Harbour. The work is meaningful, mysterious, and important.
How do you play the MDR game?
Move your cursor across the grid and watch for numbers that react. Refinable digits wiggle, scale, and lean away as your cursor gets close. Click a reacting digit to capture a random nearby pattern of refinable numbers, then watch them fly into one of the five bins (WO, FC, DR, MA, ET). Keep finding and refining the reacting numbers until every bin reaches 100% and the Cold Harbour file is complete.
Is the game free?
Yes. The Macrodata Refinement game is completely free to play in your browser. No signup, no payment, no ads inside the game.
Does it work on mobile?
Technically, yes: the game accepts touch input on phones and tablets. For the best player experience, use a desktop web browser with a mouse or trackpad, since the game relies on subtle cursor proximity, hover reactions, and precise click timing.
Will there be a leaderboard?
Leaderboards and saved runs are planned future features. The intended ranking is total numbers refined first, with completion time as the tiebreaker. Donations through Buy Me a Coffee help support added MDR functionality like this.
